When police stop people for things like broken tail lights or dark window tinting, it creates unnecessary opportunities for deadly encounters. The list of people killed after police detained them for trivial reasons is far too long—and continues to grow.

Police often argue that these kinds of stops help root out dangerous crimes by allowing them to conduct searches for guns and drugs—but the data tells a very different story.
Research shows that searches that begin with traffic stops rarely uncover contraband and have little to no benefit to safety. These stops are far too often dangerous or even deadly—especially for Black drivers, who are significantly more likely than white drivers to be pulled over and searched for the same infractions.
Police action should make communities safer. Eliminating unnecessary traffic stops nationwide is a major step toward building a criminal legal system that delivers justice for all.
