Zhang Zhan was imprisoned for trying to warn the world about the COVID-19 pandemic.
Early on in 2020, Zhang traveled to Wuhan to report on the unfolding crisis. She exposed how the Chinese government was detaining independent reporters for trying to share first-hand information, and harassing COVID-19 patients' families.

She went missing in May 2020... until authorities shared that she was thrown in jail for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.”
