Many credit unions have responded to years of low interest rates by charging more and higher fees, but MEFCU is an outlier in the amount of the fees they charge their members. Marriott workers have been charged as much as $2,000 a year in banking fees, the New York Times reported in October.

Two Philadelphia Marriott employees even filed a class-action lawsuit against MEFCU in September, claiming fees related to mini loans violated the Truth in Lending Act.
