Many young people feel that our politics is broken. Our voting system needs to build trust. We need a political culture that places the voices of young people front and centre, particularly now the voting age has been lowered to 16.
The current First Past the Post system can lead to governments that are out of step with the priorities of young people ,as discourse can be skewed towards a tiny slice of swing voters. Proportional representation - the system where every vote matters - means that politicians have to appeal to all voters, not just a select few. The London Assembly, which holds the Mayor of London to account, elects its Members through Proportional Representation.
This event will explore the impact that a more inclusive and fair voting system has had on London’s politics, and what lessons Westminster can learn from the London Assembly on the importance of ensuring all voters’ voices are heard.
Join the debate on the 14th of October!
