Bus drivers deserve safety at work. End violence against bus drivers now!
No one should go to work fearing they will be attacked.
Yet for bus drivers across the UK, that fear has become an unacceptable part of the job. Every day, drivers are subjected to abuse, intimidation, threats and violence while simply trying to do their job.
And current practices regarding bus driver safety are failing and leaving drivers vulnerable to abuse and assault. Shockingly, current advice to drivers is that they should remain in their cab at all times. This advice is deeply flawed and impractical and leaves the burden on them to manage the risk.
Bus drivers deserve to be safe and that is why we are calling on the UK Government to:
- Change legislation to make assault on public transport workers a specific criminal offence, with additional sanctions
- Police Forces to improve monitoring and prosecutions to reduce threatening behaviour and violence on buses
- Operators to strengthen their policies to protect and support drivers and hold perpetrators to account
- A creation of a frame work of engagement between Unite, local authorities, operators and police to review incidents etc. with the ability to withdraw services when agreed criteria is met.
Bus drivers deserve to be safe at work.
Add your name today and demand and end to violence against bus drivers now!
