Step 1: Introduction

“Hi, my name is _____and I’m a volunteer with Green New Deal Rising. We’re a movement of young people working to solve the climate crisis and the cost of living emergency. I’m out talking with people about our work to elect politicians who have an actual plan to solve these issues - the Green New Deal - and I want to know what you think.

Step 2: Ask about their personal experience

“How do you feel about the climate crisis? And how do you feel about the cost of living crisis?“

Prompts/Follow up questions:

  • If they’re not worried about the climate crisis: “What are the biggest issues for you now, or for other people in Coventry?” / “What do you see as the biggest challenges for our generation?”

  • If they give a very short answer: “It sounds like you are concerned about X, can you tell me more about that? How does that make you feel?”

Step 3: Share

Share your own personal story - how you feel about the climate crisis, the cost of living crisis/other social justice issues. Try to link your story to something that they have said.

Example: When I think about the climate crisis I’m worried about the way it’s going to increase flooding in my hometown. I also hear what you’re saying about how hard it is for people to get a well paying job. That’s why I’m really excited about the Green New Deal. It’s an ambitious plan to tackle the climate crisis and create millions of good jobs in the process.

Step 4: Make Your Case

This is your chance to big up the Green New Deal! It’s important to try and link what you say to the conversation you’ve been having and to tailor your pitch to the individual.

Example: You mentioned being worried about how there aren’t enough good jobs for young people in Coventry. One of the great things about the Green New Deal is that it will create a lot of really good jobs - we’re going to need people to do the work to make our society ready to tackle climate change. So there will be work in construction and environmental management, and the Green New Deal would make sure that people who work in caring jobs - like looking after older people or looking after kids - get a pay rise too.

Step 5: Ask for support

Ask 1: “We can win a Green New Deal. We can solve the climate crisis and tackle the cost of living crisis at the same time. We will win if enough people step up and get involved in our movement. We need your help. Right now that means signing our petition so that we can show politicians how much support there is for a Green New Deal. It also means that we can contact you to let you know about other ways to get involved.”

[If Yes] “Great! Let me just record your contact info here to add you to our list of supporters.” [Record resident’s information, then proceed to Ask 2]

[If No] Ask them what their concern is. Listen and respond using the Response Cycle. If they are a ‘hard no’, proceed to Wrap Up.

Ask 2: “Great! The best way to get involved in the movement for a Green New Deal is to join one of our Welcome Calls. You’ll learn more about what we’re doing to make sure that politicians have to listen to us and you’ll hear more about the Green New Deal. Can I sign you up for a Welcome Call now?

Step 6: Wrap Up

Thank them for the time, be polite - whether or not they signed up. If they did sign up, let them know how/when to expect to hear from Green New Deal Rising.
