CARE Initiative: Community Aligned Response Essentials for Small Businesses and Gathering Spaces

The CARE Initiative (Community Aligned Response Essentials) is a statewide, community care and mutual aid effort supporting workplaces, workers, and neighbors across Massachusetts in knowing their rights. CARE supports people in preparing for the possibility of government agents arriving in their workplace or gathering spaces.

CARE centers the essentials that keep our communities aligned: shared preparation, clear information, and mutual support so people feel more confident and less isolated in moments that can be confusing or intimidating - especially in the places where we work, shop, gather, organize, and connect.

This interest form is a way to stay connected as the CARE initiative gets underway.

By signing up, you’ll receive:

  • Updates on the CARE Initiative as it launches and expands

  • Information about orientations, educational resources, and learning opportunities

  • Opportunities to get involved as a volunteer, partner organization, or participating workplace

Signing up does not commit you to anything. It simply helps us share relevant information and build a connected community around CARE.

What CARE Looks Like in Practice

CARE & Workplaces

Some workplaces choose to participate by becoming a CARE Certified Workplaces.

A CARE Certified Workplace agrees to explore and adopt basic, practical steps that support shared understanding of Fourth Amendment rights. These steps may include:

  • Holding an staff conversation or orientation

  • Receiving and reviewing a workplace readiness packet

  • Reviewing workplace areas

  • Establishing clear internal procedures and boundaries

  • Displaying CARE materials that signal participation

  • Inviting other workplaces to learn about the initiative

Workplaces do not need to complete every step to participate. Care is designed to provide support and community connection.

After a Workplace Signs the CARE Employer Pledge

Workplaces that sign the CARE Employer Pledge commit to reviewing and implementing basic workplace procedures related to Fourth Amendment considerations.

Participating workplaces may:

  • Schedule a brief orientation with the CARE Initiative team

  • Receive a resource packet to review and share with staff

Materials include:

  • Clear explanations of different types of warrants

  • Guidance on workplace areas

  • Practical, non-confrontational steps workers can take if government agents arrive

Getting Involved

CARE is powered by community members, volunteers, and partner organizations.
