Charles County Against Data Centers Coalition Interest Form
All across the country, billionaires and tech corporations are trying to ram through environmentally destructive and harmful data centers that will create very few jobs, while using enormous amounts of power and water, thus greatly increasing our utility bills, creating lots of heat and noise, and overall declining our qualities of life and property values. Oftentimes, they try to put these unpopular data centers in minority communities, and Charles County is no different.
Charles County is currently being eyed for data center development, unfortunately. Luckily, we are in a much better spot right now than many other jurisdictions, in the sense that they have not currently passed the zoning to allow for data centers to be built here, and so data centers can not become a reality until those zoning changes are first passed. Right now, they are trying to make these zoning changes to allow for data centers in Charles County via Zoning Text Amendment 25-187.
Although it is always an uphill battle going toe-to-toe with tech giants like Google, who is an investor in the TeraWulf company trying to build a data center at the Morgantown Power Plant in Charles County that would use as much power as the entire city of Baltimore, we have seen in other communities around the country that it is not impossible to defeat these companies and save ourselves from these harmful data centers becoming a reality here. However, to overcome these odds, it's going to take coming together as a community and fighting back strategically and with unity. That is the core goal and purpose of the Charles County Against Data Centers Coalition.
