Christina Cover for Assembly | Day One Supporters

My name is Christina Cover. I am a 28-year-old UFT public school teacher living in The Bronx. I serve on Bronx Community Board 1. I’m strongly considering running for Assembly in District 84 (Mott Haven, Longwood, Hunts Point, Port Morris, Highbridge/Yankee Stadium). My parents immigrated to The Bronx from Jamaica, and my Mom studied at Hostos Community College.

From interning at the U.S. Department of Education, to serving with the AmeriCorps program City Year, to my current work as a full-time public school teacher and leading a literacy organization, I have learned and experienced the tremendous importance of reading skills for our young people. Each day at school, I work to help striving readers move closer to grade level and learn more about the world around them. In my view, literacy is one of the most significant civil rights issues of our time.

Right now, many students are reading far below grade level. But we can’t look at this issue in isolation. Important reading laws are not moving fast enough. Many students, educators, and communities do not have the resources and support they need to succeed.

As an Assembly Member, I would demand continued investment in community violence interruption programs and develop meaningful initiatives to take a proactive approach to safety. I would champion legislation that raises the bar for literacy in schools, particularly for Bronx students with dyslexia, building on the successful work of innovative school communities like South Bronx Literacy Academy. And I would join the relentless fight to freeze the rent, make buses fast and free, and deliver universal childcare.

I am a democratic socialist running to keep a focus on public safety, literacy and addressing the affordability crisis...and I am doing it all without accepting a cent of corporate or super PAC donations. Join us!

If you’re ready to send a Gen Z teacher to Albany to advocate for the Bronx, help us launch strong by pledging to be a DAY ONE supporter! We will need at least 75 in district donations to unlock matching funds for our grassroots campaign.
