Tell the U.S. Treasury Department to close the “de minimis” loophole to protect American consumers and manufacturing
E-commerce giants such as Amazon are exploiting a provision in U.S. trade law known as “de minimis,” which has become a loophole through which companies import millions of packages into the U.S. each day, skirting tariffs and traditional customs inspections. This helps them evade bans on forced labor products, like those enforced under the Uyghur Forced Labor Act.
Despite the enactment of that law, far too many of the “fast fashion” products bought online today are made in forced labor camps by the Uyghur population, a religious and ethnic minority group held in internment camps in Xinjiang, China. The de minimis loophole helps facilitate these products right to our doorsteps.
Watch our latest report above and then sign the petition to the U.S. Treasury Department urging them to use its existing authority to immediately close the de minimis loophole.
We support the administration’s stepped-up enforcement of forced labor products and believe immediate action should be taken to close the de minimis gateway given the scale of this emergency.
| To: U.S. Treasury: Please close the de minimis loophole in order to prevent unethically-made “fast fashion” and other goods entering the U.S. from circumventing the Uyghur Forced Labor Act and other important human rights & environmental laws.
