DEFUND IMPD

Between 2014-2016, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers were involved in 56 shootings, including 16 fatal shootings. In 2015, Indianapolis had more police shooting fatalities than in New York, Chicago and Dallas.

According to the Guardian, IMPD fails to comply with numerous international human rights laws and is one of the worst police departments in the U.S. IMPD rules "carry no mention of the need for force to be proportional to the danger" during police interventions. There is also no requirement for "police officers to apply an escalating set of measures before they reach the point of lethal force."

So, IMPD can kill a civilian, who they're meant to serve and protect, for low level felonies like carrying a fake ID, stealing a phone, etc.

IMPD's violent practices are funded by more than 30% of the city's budget.

On July 8, the Office of Finance and Management will meet with each agency/department to review their budgets. The discussion, which covers revenue trends, grant submissions, budget savings/shortfalls, capital schedule and current year trending, is an opportunity to DEFUND IMPD.
