Demand Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins protect access to abortion care for all veterans now.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is considering prohibiting the Veterans Health Administration from providing abortions to veterans and their dependents, except in life-threatening circumstances.

If Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins follows through on the plan, it would overturn a decision by the Biden administration to grant this critical medical care for veterans in response to the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision. Consider it the Trump administration’s first national abortion ban.

The VHA operates 172 medical centers and more than 1,100 outpatient clinics around the world. In 2024 alone, the VHA provided $187 billion in benefits to 6.7 million veterans and survivors. More than half of all female veterans of reproductive age — at least 345,000 women — live in one of 12 states where abortion is banned or likely to be banned.

For many veterans, the VHA is the only health care they or their dependents have. Eliminating access to abortion care, even in the case of rape or incest, will have a devastating impact and create increased economic challenges for some of the nation’s most vulnerable families.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has not finalized this decision. It is open to public feedback. This is our chance to speak up and stop this from happening.
