The White House ordered the federal government to shut down at midnight on September 30 because Democrats refused to go along with the Republicans' selfish and cruel short-term funding bill.

Unfortunately, three Senate Democrats—Catherine Cortez Masto, John Fetterman, and Angus King (an independent who caucuses with the Democrats)—have already caved and sided with Trump and Republicans.

The big, ugly bill that Donald Trump and the Republicans passed earlier this year funnels wealth to the rich and powerful while taking away health care, food assistance, and basic security from the rest of us. Many of us are already struggling to afford groceries, housing, and health care.

Democrats must stand firm and united. If the shutdown ends on Trump's terms, things will only get worse:

• The $1 trillion in cuts that Republicans and Trump made to Medicaid—the largest cuts in history—will remain. These cuts will kick millions of Americans off their health coverage over the next decade.

• And families' health insurance premiums will skyrocket. If Affordable Care Act premium tax credits are allowed to expire, next year's premium costs are expected to rise by as much as 75%. The Congressional Budget Oaffice warns that as many as 2.2 million people could lose their insurance in the first year alone.

Republicans are causing chaos by forcing this government shutdown. Democrats must stand firm and united to ensure that Congress restores Medicaid and extends critical ACA subsidies. Anything less would be an abdication of Congress's responsibility to the American people.
