Donald Trump signed an executive order changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America on August 27.

Google and Apple have complied with his order. Americans opening Google or Apple maps now see "Lake America."

Lake Ontario has carried its historical Indigenous name for hundreds of years, predating the founding of both the United States and Canada. Trump's executive order does not erase that history!

Google made the switch first. Then, Trump personally pressured Apple to follow. This isn't new: Trump repeatedly pressures corporations, universities, media companies, law firms, and other institutions.

But not every American map provider bent the knee to Trump. MapQuest publicly rejected Trump's demand, declaring, "We're not changing it." And map users showed their support immediately — MapQuest moved up to the #1 spot on map app downloads!

MapQuest's refusal to appease Trump proves that technology companies have a choice about whether they turn their platforms into extensions of Trump's political agenda.

Our public pressure campaign will force Google and Apple to reverse course, restore the lake's actual name, and stop making Americans participate in Trump's latest BS. Disney had changed course and stood up to Trump after public backlash demanding that Jimmy Kimmel be reinstated. Now, Google and Apple can show backbone, too, and change course.

Americans — and people around the world — are watching. Google and Apple need to do the right thing, now!
