Host country Azerbaijan blocks environmental protests and its state oil company, SOCAR, has announced plans to expand fossil fuel production –– a direct violation of the Paris Agreement.

In fact, Azerbaijan appointed a former fossil fuel executive from SOCAR to be the President of COP29.

As it stands, this year’s COP climate summit is shaping up to be the most restricted and oppressive in history. Azerbaijan has already banned independent journalists from attending and began its crackdown on civil society and independent media.
