In this moment of escalation attack on our community by ICE. We are responding through organizing at a local and federal level to love and protect our community and to end deportation and detention. We, along with our partners and Reps. Judy Chu, Pramila Jayapal, Zoe Lofgren, and Ayanna Pres re-introduce The Southeast Asian Deportation Relief Act (SEADRA) Bill - that will end deportation for Southeast Asians as we know it.
What is The Southeast Asian Deportation Relief Act (SEADRA) Bill?
- Ends detentions and deportations for SEAs who arrived before 2008: Establishes that Southeast Asian community members from Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam cannot be deported.
- Extends work authorization for 5 years: Permanently extend work authorization for Southeast Asian community members with final orders of removal.
- End in-person ICE check-ins and limits it to virtual check-ins every 5 years.
- Provides an opportunity to return to the U.S. for SEAs who have already been deported.
- Restore due process by allowing Southeast Asian refugees still in the U.S. to to fight their deportation order.
The SEADRA Bill is part of a comprehensive national policy - The SEARR Platform.
What is the SEARR Platform?
Through our long term strategy, we are partnering with existing national policy campaigns to demand US accountability. Below are our partner campaigns:
1) Victims of Agent Orange Relief Act (H.R. 3052) – This bill demands US responsibility for the harms caused by Agent Orange by mandating funding for the cleanup of Agent Orange in Vietnam, and funding for medical expenses and housing for those impacted by this chemical agent in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.
2) Legacies of War Recognition and UXO Removal Act (S. 3189) – This budgetary bill calls for the US to take responsibility for its mass bombings in Southeast Asia, and to allocate funds to remove unexploded ordnances and provide other assistance in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
3) New Way Forward Act (H.R. 2374) - The New Way Forward (NWF) bill proposes to disentangle the immigration and criminal legal systems, and to address the harms of the 1996 immigration laws, which facilitated the deportation of Southeast Asians, as well as other low-income immigrant communities. Specifically, NWF would provide a pathway for deported persons to return to the US; remove drug and firearms charges as grounds for inadmissibility; and establish a 5 year statute of limitations on deportations.
