Fight Back Against Private Prisons

A private prison corporation is asking the Supreme Court for the same immunity protections as federal, state and local governments—but without the accountability that comes with it. If they win, these companies could be shielded from responsibility for breaking the law even more than they already are. This would encourage public employers to outsource good union jobs in corrections to private prison companies.
This Supreme Court case won’t do anything to improve staffing levels, reduce mandatory overtime and prevent burnout. But it threatens to further line the pockets of greedy CEOs who care more about profit than public safety. If these companies can more easily assert immunity from legal consequences when they break the law, it will only make it easier for them to convince state and local governments to outsource our jobs.
Every day, they’re taking advantage of the crisis in corrections to try to expand their power and their reach across the country. And they will not stop, no matter how this case ends. When AFSCME members stand together for public safety, we win. Pledge your support today to stop the corporate takeover of corrections!
