Free Guided Hike to Threatened Old Forest in the Green Mountain National Forest: Postponed to Feb. 22, 2025
WHAT: Join Standing Trees for a free guided snowshoe to threatened old forest in the planned Telephone Gap logging project, and a rare stretch of protected old growth.
WHEN: Saturday February 22th at 11 am (weather date February 16 at the same time).
MORE INFO: This is a fairly strenuous winter hike to a stunning and little-known area of the Green Mountain National Forest near Chittenden, Vermont. Plan on being outside for at least 3-4 hours and traveling 4-5 miles with about 900 ft of elevation change. Snowshoes and warm, comfortable boots are a must, unless you are skilled on back-country skis and want to bring those (Cross country skis aren't recommended because of terrain and snow levels). We'll visit beautiful a old forest targeted for logging in the Telephone Gap project, and hopefully make it to a rare stretch of protected old forest. You'll come away with a new appreciation for why this special landscape has been the focus of record public engagement and a flashpoint in the national debate over mature and old-growth forests on federal public lands.
This hike is free, but RSVPs are required for the exact location and weather updates. Please reach out to cgish@standingtrees.org with any questions and please don't let a lack of snowshoes keep you away — we have a modest supply of snowshoes that we'd love to lend to you for the day, just note that in the sign up form!
