Members of Birmingham DSA want to know if you're interested in getting involved with a Stop Cop City Working Group in our chapter!

Stop Cop City (SCC) or Defend the Atlanta Forest (SCC) is a decentralized international movement whose goal is to stop construction of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, or "Cop City," by the Atlanta Police Foundation and the City of Atlanta.

43% of the cops who will train at Cop City will be from police departments outside of the state of Georgia. Our friend Mariah Parker from Athens, Georgia, explains why this number is important:

"This means that the police from Athens are going to be sent there to learn urban warfare, from Minneapolis, Los Angeles, New York, Rio de Janeiro, Accra, Jakarta, Berlin. Anywhere you can point to on a map -- they are going to send their police there to learn the state-of-the-art ways to beat the s*** out of you."

Does this mean police departments from all over Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Alabama will send their cops just a few hours away to train at Cop City? We think it's highly likely -- unless we stop Cop City.

We're considering many possibilities for a Stop Cop City Working Group, including...
  • Determining how we'd like to get involved with Drop Cop City, the local campaign to pressure Birmingham-headquartered Brasfield & Gorrie to drop themselves as general contractors of Cop City. This campaign is being organized by a coalition of local organizations and spearheaded by our friends at Bham SURJ,
  • Informing how our chapter does socialist organizing in support of the Stop Cop City and Drop Cop City movements,
  • And anything you'd like to bring to the organizing table!
