One of 35 global biodiversity hotspots, California sustains unparalleled diversity. All are imperiled by climate change and drought, invasive species and pesticide proliferation, habitat destruction and wildfire. Surprisingly, most of this biodiversity remains undescribed by science, with thousands of species yet to be discovered and named.

Fortunately, the state is supporting scientists in a push to discover and secure all our biodiversity. This voucher-based, DNA-powered All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) will secure specimens of every species, and sequence DNA barcodes for every taxon. Current efforts focus on Insecta, Funga, Soil Biodiversity, and Intertidal Biodiversity.
