Why become a member?

Members are our frontline advocates, ready to shape the movement, share information, and take action. By applying for membership, you’ll join a community of concerned citizens ready to help make solutions happen.

Energy Democracy Now! believes that seriously addressing climate change means a democratic movement, where people will power the solution. We operate as a co-operative because democratic solutions require democratic leadership. One member gets one vote.

By becoming a share-holding member, you will

• be entitled to vote in person at a special or annual meeting of members,

• be eligible to sit on the board of directors,

• have a voice in shaping the vision for community-owned energy in PEI,

• help support community-led projects that put Island residents—not corporations—in control, and

• join other members in working together for climate justice and energy democracy.

The Application Process

As a registered co-operative, under the Co-operative Associations Act, new members are required to apply and purchase a share. Applying for membership with Energy Democracy Now! Co-operative is easy and just takes a few simple steps:

1. Fill out the application form. This is a short form that takes 5 minutes. Provide us with a few details about yourself, tell us how you heard about us, and let us know why you want to join our Co-operative.

2. The application form includes the field, “recommended by EDN member.” Under the Co-operative Associations Act, new co-op members must be recommended by an existing member. If you know someone who is already a member of EDN, who suggested you become a member or invited you to learn more about the group, you can list their name. The recommender does not need to submit anything on behalf of the applicant. If you don’t know anyone who is a member currently, email info@energydemocracy.ca, and we can help you with this part of your application.

3. Your application will be reviewed and approved by the board of directors. The board meets at the start of each month and reviews new applications, and once an application is approved, a follow-up email is sent to notify the applicant

4. Once you receive a follow-up email notifying you that your application is approved, you will be invited to purchase a share and officially become a member-owner of the co-operative.
