Make the LA Olympics Plastic-Free!
Dear International Olympic Committee & LA28,
From production to disposal, plastic pollution threatens our environment and public health. Single-use plastic goods, products designed to become trash after just one use, increase these threats.
As students and athletes at UCLA, we understand the Olympic and Paralympic Games will bring millions of visitors to Los Angeles, and thousands of athletes and coaching teams to the Olympic Village, hosted on our campus. Without intentional decisions to limit single-use plastics, millions of pieces of plastic trash will be left to clog our landfills, litter our campus, and pollute our coastline.
The International Olympic Committee and LA28 have a unique opportunity to prevent plastic pollution by:
- Replacing single-use plates, food containers and cups in the Olympic Village at UCLA with reusable ones that are cleaned and reused instead of thrown away
Prohibiting single-use plastics in venues, fanzones, and Olympic Village dining areas
Providing widespread water refill stations to reduce bottled water waste
Incentivizing attendees to bring and use reusable containers
By preventing plastic pollution at the Games, the IOC and LA28 can set up LA and UCLA to reduce waste at all future events– supporting healthier, cleaner communities long after the closing ceremony.
I urge you to eliminate single-use plastics during the 2028 Olympic & Paralympic Games.
