Michigan's medical community is coming together to express their support for Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, a doctor who has dedicated his career to protecting Michiganders' public health. AN OPEN LETTER FROM THE MICHIGAN MEDICAL COMMUNITY:
In Support of Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for United States Senate
To the People of Michigan:
We are medical professionals from across Michigan — physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, certified and registered nurses, and others, practicing in communities from Detroit to Marquette — and we are writing together to add our names in support of Dr. Abdul El-Sayed's candidacy for the United States Senate.
Dr. El-Sayed earned his medical degree and, like many of us at some point in our careers, faced a choice about where to direct a life in medicine. He chose public health; not because it was the easier path, but because it multiplies what a doctor can do, extending care from one patient at a time to entire cities and states.
As Detroit's health officer, he rebuilt a department hollowed out by decades of disinvestment, expanded access to care in some of the state's most underserved neighborhoods, and led the city's response to public health emergencies most physicians never encounter in an entire career. That is medicine, practiced at scale, and it is exactly the kind of clinical judgment Michigan needs in the United States Senate.
Abdul's health care agenda reflects that judgment. He is committed to lowering the cost of prescription drugs; cracking down on the hospital consolidation that has left too many Michigan communities with fewer options and higher bills; relieving the burden of medical debt that follows our patients long after treatment ends; protecting reproductive health care; and defending Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act from further cuts.
This Senate race will help decide whether Congress has a majority that puts patients first, or one that continues to make our jobs harder and our patients' care more expensive and less accessible. We have treated patients under both kinds of Congresses. We know which one serves the people in our exam rooms.
