Despite their commitment to leading “the cultural in promoting a just and sustainable future,” the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has received huge financial donations from Henry Kravis -- the founder of private equity group KKR -- and has named several galleries after him (and also appointed his wife, Marie-Josée Kravis, as board chair).

Marie-Josée Kravis has long ties (since 1973!) to the Hudson Institute -- a right wing think tank that promulgates climate change denial theories -- having served as a senior fellow and former vice chair of the board of trustees. For years the Hudson Institute was funded by Donors Trust, a dark money group with deep ties to the Charles Koch Foundation.

As of 2022, KKR had over $25 billion in fossil fuel assets under management.   KKR is one of the worst of the large private equity firms still investing in dirty fossil fuel projects that continue to drive greenhouse gas emissions, destroy Indigenous lands, and poison Black and brown communities.

By continuing to elevate the Kravis name, MoMA is giving Henry Kravis cover for his company’s destructive deeds that are leading to catastrophic consequences for our planet. This is completely unacceptable and contrary to everything MoMA has put out about their commitment to climate sustainability. The Kravis family, and other barons investing in violent climate-destroying projects, must be pressured until they phase out fossil fuel investments driving the climate crisis.

I am strongly urging you to sever all ties with Henry Kravis and remove his wife, Marie-Josée Kravis, from your board of directors – at least until they ensure they have no fossil fuel investments by 2030. By continuing to affiliate with Henry Kravis and elevate his name, you are providing cover for his company’s destructive deeds that are leading to catastrophic consequences for our planet. This is completely unacceptable and contrary to everything you have put out about your commitment to climate sustainability. Please live up to your values and cut ties to the Kravis family today.
