Take Action: Nationalize the Airlines - Don’t Merge Them!
Last week, United Airlines Chief Executive Scott Kirby lobbied President Trump for approval to merge United Airlines with competitor American, reducing the “Big Four” national airlines down to three.
Previous mega-mergers between airlines have raised prices and made service worse for consumers. Even American Airlines’ CEO issued a statement that a merger with United “would be negative for competition and for consumers.”
So far, both President Trump and American Airlines’s CEO have rejected United’s offers. But that resistance didn’t stop a bipartisan group of senators from sending letters to both United and American, seeking information about how a merger would affect prices and availability of flights for consumers.
And Trump’s Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffy, says he sees ‘room’ for mergers in the airline industry.
A few months ago, More Perfect Union investigated a better, more radical solution if these companies see the need to get bigger: Nationalizing the airlines, and making them accountable to the public.
Watch our investigation, then sign the petition: Congress and the President should block any attempted merger between United Airlines and American Airlines! The only way we should let the “Big Four” airlines combine is if we nationalize them!
