Dear Washington State Legislators:

We, the undersigned students from Washington’s colleges, universities, community and technical colleges, along with our adult allies, urge state legislators to act without delay to expand reproductive healthcare access by passing legislation that would require all publicly funded campuses to provide medication abortion (MAB, or the abortion pill) through their campus health services.

Washington has over 360,000 students enrolled in public post-secondary institutions, with nearly 196,000 able to get pregnant. While abortion is legal here, cost, transportation, stigma, and navigating care for the first time creates real barriers—especially for students who are BIPOC, disabled, LGBTQIA+, low-income, international, parenting, or commuting.

Medication abortion is a safe, non-invasive option for ending a pregnancy within the first 10 weeks, with complication rates below 0.4%.

  • Many providers working in on-campus health centers are already qualified to offer MAB within their scope of practice and could start offering this care with very few changes or additional expenses.

  • All campuses, including those without on-campus health centers, have the ability to provide access to accurate information and resources through a comprehensive health services webpage.

  • The barriers students face without on-campus access can include appointment availability delays, additional expenses, lost wages, and other logistical challenges. These challenges can push them later into pregnancy, making care more expensive and harder to access.

Demand for abortion care in Washington is growing as people travel here from states with bans. By providing MAB on our campuses, we can reduce strain on community clinics, ensure timely care for students, and uphold our state’s commitment to reproductive freedom.

Since 2022, students from across the state have been organizing and urging lawmakers to pass statewide legislation so that no student on any college campus is left to navigate accessing abortion care alone. We call on our elected officials to lead by passing legislation to provide medication abortion care on publicly funded campuses—protecting bodily autonomy, reducing health inequities, and ensuring every student can control their own future.

Signed,

Students of Washington State’s Colleges and Universities, and our Adult Allies
