Parenting is Political: Consciousness-Raising Book Club

Join us for a transformative journey through learning, discussion, and action!

Parenting is Political invites you to our Consciousness-Raising Book Club, where we’ll explore the intersections of parenting, politics, and liberation through the lens of Paulo Freire’s revolutionary theories. We meet on Zoom, ensuring accessibility for everyone, and we’d love for you to join us in this dynamic, thought-provoking space.

Meeting Dates

We’ll gather the last week of January, February, March, and April, creating space for connection, critical thought, and collective action.

What’s the Purpose?

This isn’t just a book club—it’s a space for conscientização, or critical consciousness, as theorized by Paulo Freire. In his transformative work, Freire emphasized the importance of dialogical learning—where everyone brings their lived experiences and knowledge to co-create understanding and action. By engaging in critical conversations about parenting and its broader social implications, we aim to:

  • Interrogate systems of oppression impacting families, children, and communities.
  • Empower parents, caregivers, and allies with tools to navigate and resist these systems.
  • Build collective action toward equity and liberation for all.

Who Can Join?

Everyone is welcome! Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, educator, or simply passionate about justice, you belong here. No prior knowledge of Paulo Freire or parenting activism is required—just a willingness to show up, learn, and engage.

What to Expect

Each month, we’ll read a selection that connects to Freirean themes of power, dialogue, and liberation. During our Zoom sessions, we’ll engage in small group discussions, collective brainstorming, and opportunities for actionable steps.

Why Join?

This book club isn’t just about reading—it’s about transformation. Together, we’ll unpack how parenting itself can be a radical, political act and build a supportive community for creating change.
