Put Birth Control Pills On Your Local Shelves - #FreeThePill
Can you put a pack of birth control pills on the shelf at your local CVS or student store? Well, not exactly, but we're going to help you get as close as possible! Young activists who sign up for this campaign will receive in the mail:
- Several fake packs of birth control pills for you to leave on the shelves at your local CVS, Walgreens, and Student Stores. Yes, really! We want to help folks imagine what it would look like if birth control pills were available on the shelves - what better way than to do it ourselves!

Check out this mockup of what the boxes will look like! The front (left) is made to look like someone can actually buy birth control pills. But then when customers pick it up, they'll see on the back (right) that it's a call to action! The QR code leads to a webpage detailing what you can do to help bring The Pill over-the-counter and onto the shelves right next to condoms and Plan B.
In addition, we'll also send you:
- Instructions on how to leave the boxes behind at your local stores, post a "shelfie" about it on social media, and even secure local media coverage if you'd like.
- More #FreeThePill merchandise, including stickers showing pills on a shelf that you can place in bathrooms, on bulletin boards, telephone polls, etc. to spread the message far and wide.
- Talking points and Frequently Asked Questions to help you talk to your peers and community about the campaign
- Sample post language and examples of what your social media posts can look like
You go to your local drug store when you need cold medicine, condoms, Plan B, tampons ... and you should be able to go there to buy birth control too. If you want to #FreeThePill and help put birth control pills on the shelves — no prescription required — join this campaign from Advocates for Youth's #FreeThePill Youth Council.
Young people are tired of jumping through hoops to get the contraception they need, and they’re tired of not being trusted to make their own healthcare decisions. So we're going to lead this fight for change, and we're going to win!
(P.S. Did you know that Emergency Contraception, like Plan B, used to only be available with a prescription as well? It’s available over-the-counter today because people organized, educated their community, and demanded it. We can do the same thing with birth control. But only if we find some dedicated young people to go all-in. So if you or someone you know is a young person who wants to help on this campaign, sign up today!)
