Freedom of speech is the constitutional foundation that allows us all a free society to craft our own future through culture, expression, and art. But it is no longer enough that the Bill of Rights guarantees this freedom.

Since 2020, prosecutors in over 500 criminal cases have used artists’ lyrics as evidence against the artist. Without further Congressional action, the freedom of speech and artistic expression present in music and culture will continue to be muted.

The Restoring Artistic Protection (RAP) Act is one of the first steps towards ensuring that artists and creatives are protected from the wrongful use of their lyrics and speech against them in criminal and civil proceedings. The RAP act would limit the admissibility of evidence of an artist’s creative or artistic expression against them in court.
