Come Tell Roxbury's Town Council: No Jails in Roxbury!
The Washington Post reported that DHS wants to build 16 detention centers across the country, each to hold 1500 or more people. They will create these by converting local warehouses.
And Roxbury is one of these towns.
If you oppose this notion, join us at an upcoming Roxbury Town Council meeting, and speak up during the Public Comment section.
Prisons are not a partisan issue
This affects everyone in Roxbury, and the towns around us. Even if you support the Trump administration and ICE, that doesn't mean you want an ICE detainment facility in town. Any prison, in general…
Lowers property values
Hurts local businesses
Strains local Fire and Police services–which can lead to higher taxes
Puts strain on sewer, electrical and water utilities
With just six days' notice, 65 people attended the Jan 30th town council meeting to express concerns, to express surprise, and to express opposition.
Federal overreach is not a partisan issue
The mayor was clear: the town of Roxbury was not consulted about this plan. They knew nothing about it, and did not request that Roxbury be included. It seems ICE is pursuing this plan unilaterally, without regard for your preferences, or your concerns.
We must keep this matter in the forefront. We must keep the town council accountable to its citizens.
Remember: When a union goes on strike their motto is "one day longer" – that is, the strike must last just one day longer than those who lead, until their demands are met.
Roxbury will last one day longer.
