Save the Social Security Administration!
For 90 years, Social Security has paid benefits in full and on time. Until now.
This year, Donald Trump and Elon Musk pushed out 7,000 Social Security experts and replaced them with an AI chatbot. Shockingly, the chatbot isn’t working, and people can’t get through on the phone. Now, the Trump administration is reassigning some of the remaining staff away from in-person offices and toward the overwhelmed phone lines.
The Social Security Administration has always provided the world class service that Americans deserve, helping people navigate the most consequential financial decisions of their lives. Because of Trump and Musk, the 10,000+ Americans who retire every day are more on their own than ever before. So are the millions of people with disabilities, survivors, and children who rely on Social Security’s modest benefits.
And while most people receive their Social Security benefits with direct deposit, 700,000 people receive their Social Security benefits by check.
Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s henchmen at SSA decided that starting this September, most paper checks will stop, though they did say there could be an exception for “people who really need it.” They did not offer details on how “people who really need it” will be determined, or how those people prove their need.
So as soon as September 1st, those 700,000 people are in for a rude surprise. And when they call the Social Security Administration for help, they will have to navigate a glitchy AI bot instead of talking to someone who can actually help.
We need to fight back.
The Social Security Administration is far more efficient than its counterparts at private pensions. Social Security spends less than 1% on administration―as opposed to as much as 15% at private companies. And it’s funded from the same Social Security trust fund that we pay into with every paycheck. We deserve better.
Seniors' health care is at risk too with these cuts, with SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and SSDI (Social Security Disability Income) benefits also administered through the Social Security Administration. This affects all of us!
Send the petition: Urge Congress to Save the Social Security Administration, restore its full funding, rehire its staff, and give Americans the Social Security system that we've paid into all of our lives!
