Public education gives every child—no matter their background, income, or immigration status—a chance to learn, grow, and succeed. But today, that promise is in danger.

Across Georgia and the nation, public schools are being defunded and destabilized. Now, we face a new threat: Promise Scholarships (school vouchers) that take public money away from our schools and redirect it to private institutions.

Let’s be clear—this policy does not help working families. It harms immigrant communities, students with disabilities, and rural families who depend on public schools and often don’t have access to private options. Vouchers only serve those who already have privilege.

This fight has deep roots. School vouchers were first used in the 1950s as a way to avoid racial integration—giving families a pathway to leave public schools and enroll in private ones that weren’t held to federal standards. Today, that same model threatens to dismantle the progress we’ve made.

We owe it to future generations to speak up.
We owe it to our communities to act.
We can’t let public education be hollowed out by false promises.
