In the last few days, more and more leaders and organizations are joining the demand to remove Justice Clarence Thomas from the Supreme Court as it’s clear he cannot be impartial. Newly released text messages show how Justice Thomas' wife, long-time right-wing activist Ginni Thomas, actively urged the Trump White House to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, both leading up to the deadly January 6 insurrection and after.
But despite his wife's active role in Trump’s attempted coup, Justice Thomas not only failed to recuse himself in a case regarding Trump's records on January 6, he was the only justice to dissent in the 8-1 Supreme Court ruling that cleared the way for House investigators probing the insurrection to obtain Trump's records.
This is a clear conflict of interest and shows Justice Thomas’ severely compromised sense of impartiality and morality.
Justice Thomas' refusal to recuse is the latest in a long history of using his power to aid a right-wing agenda. He was involved in other Supreme Court cases about the 2020 election and the January 6 insurrection, and more are likely to come before the court. And Ginni Thomas is working with many right-wing groups directly involved in high-stakes cases before the court—on abortion, affirmative action, and gun rights.
