There’s no sugarcoating this one: Republican Sen. Mike Lee supported overthrowing the 2020 presidential election.

In text messages recently released by CNN, Lee frequently contacted White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, encouraging the Trump administration in its efforts to overturn the election results.

On November 7, 2020, Lee offered “every legal and constitutional remedy” to restore faith in American elections, Republican-speak for overturning the results. Over the next few months, he spent seemingly every waking hour—and indeed, told Meadows on January 4 he was working on this for 14 hours per day—to do just that.

Lee was so hellbent on having a personal hand in the crumbling of our democracy that he pushed for recounts in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Michigan; advocated for “a very small handful of states to have their legislatures appoint alternative slates of delegates”; and theorized that swing states could submit competing slates of electors.

Lee’s interpretation of the Constitution is simple. Want to steal an election? Just get states to ignore the results! Quite the judicial mind, that one.

These actions are dangerous and dastardly enough, but that’s not all. Lee also serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, one of the most influential committees in Congress. In addition to overseeing the Department of Justice and reviewing legislation, the SJC is also responsible for hearing and reporting executive and judicial nominations to the full Senate.

An election-denier committed to trampling on our democracy as long as it serves his far-right political ideology has no place determining who is qualified to serve as a judge. Mike Lee needs to be removed from the Senate Judiciary Committee immediately.
