The people of Minnesota are the antidote to fascism. We are witnessing the culmination of years of deep community organizing. In the face of state violence, Minnesotans turned to each other, building broad coalitions rooted in crossethnic, crossracial solidarity and human rights and dignity as core values that belong to everyone. Minnesota showed us the power of the people after George Floyd’s murder by police in 2020, and as the people resist ICE, protect their neighbors, and organize an historic general strike, they are showing us what sustained organizing and community care can do to resist institutional violence today. We honor the memories of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti as allies who showed up as legal observers, leveraging their privilege to protect vulnerable communities.
ICE and the Trump Administration are committing violence in Minnesota because they are threatened by the power that Minnesotans hold– power that all of us hold when we act collectively. This commitment to radical love and resistance are antithetical to the fearmongering, isolating tactics of the Trump administration. Minnesota is a working model for community-driven safety, grounded in looking out for each other– a model that can render police and immigration enforcement irrelevant.
Southeast Asians are an essential part of the fabric of Minnesota, making up the largest Asian American population in the state. One of the largest Hmong communities in the US calls St. Paul home. In 2025, the Trump administration escalated ICE enforcement, including the largest deportation of former refugees to Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Deportations to Laos have increased by 140%, the highest level in 15 years. This includes the removal of Hmong and Lao refugees.
Despite ICE’s violent and inhumane tactics against our communities, we continue to resist and organize. In addition to providing in-language Know Your Rights and other deportation resources, SEAFN has supported on the ground organizing in the state, building a model of community care that includes advocacy, education and outreach, and legal services across agencies. We remain steadfast in our commitment to end Southeast Asian deportation with our campaign to pass the Southeast Asian Deportation Relief Act (SEADRA), which aims to bring immediate assistance to directly impacted community members. We refuse to give into fear and will continue to organize for a just world, a world where ICE has no place.
Many of us carry the grief and trauma of this moment and of the generations before us. The people of Minnesota are showing us how to turn to each other for support and build movements for collective liberation. Minnesota is showing us that the power of the people is stronger than any of these violent institutions. We are reminded that our communities have lived in the US longer than ICE has existed, and we look forward to outliving this violent authoritarian organization.
