However, Connecticut hospitals have witnessed a concerning trend of reduced spending on financial assistance, resulting in hospitals spending $339 million less than the value of their tax exemption. This deficit could have eliminated medical debt for 240,612 Connecticut residents, underscoring the urgency of addressing this issue.

Acute care expenses, such as hospital stays or accident treatment, account for significant medical debt nationwide. Shockingly, even individuals with health insurance coverage struggle to afford medical bills, further emphasizing the systemic nature of this issue.

Moreover, communities of color disproportionately bear the brunt of inadequate financial assistance, leading to delayed or forgone medical care. This exacerbates existing health disparities, highlighting the urgent need for reform.

By enhancing regulations and ensuring the accessibility of financial assistance programs, we can prevent unnecessary medical debt and promote the well-being of all Connecticut residents.
