Sign the petition: Strengthen reproductive health care access for disabled people
No one—including those with disabilities—should be denied access to reproductive healthcare.
A recent study by the National Partnership for Women & Families shows that over 36 million women of reproductive age, including 2.9 million with disabilities, live in states likely to ban abortion post-Dobbs decision. This is alarming as disabled people face an 11 times greater risk of maternal death and are more likely to experience complications during pregnancy.
The issue is worsened by the shortage of health care providers trained to manage pregnancies in disabled people.
Representatives Cori Bush, Ayanna Pressley, and Senators Patty Murray and Tammy Duckworth have reintroduced the Reproductive Health Care Accessibility Act (PDF) in Congress, aiming to dismantle barriers to reproductive health care for the disabled.
The Reproductive Health Care Accessibility Act is designed to:
Remove barriers to vital care for those with disabilities.
Propose grants for training health care professionals on disability-specific reproductive needs.
Boost disability representation in medical fields.
Set up a center for best practices in disability-focused sexual and reproductive health care.
Recognizing the deep-seated impact of health care barriers on individuals with disabilities, it is committed to ensuring comprehensive and accessible reproductive health care for the disability community - a critical step towards health equity.
Let's pledge to leave no one behind, ensuring everyone receives the care they need, exactly when they need it.
