Sign the petition: The Supreme Court was wrong to crown Trump as a king

The Supreme Court has ruled on Trump’s presidential immunity. The legalese: Trump is immune from criminal charges for official actions but not unofficial acts.

The real deal, as summarized by Justice Sotomayor: "the president is now a king above the law." The conservative supermajority of the Supreme Court has ruled that former President Donald Trump has absolute immunity for his core constitutional powers.

The principle that "no one is above the law" is a cornerstone of American democracy. This fundamental concept ensures that every individual, regardless of their status, wealth, or position, is held accountable to the same legal standards. In recent years, former President Donald Trump's actions and legal battles have tested this principle like never before. And now, the Stolen Supreme Court, with a 6-3 decision by the conservative supermajority (no surprise there) has decimated justice, fairness and equality.

Trump faces multiple, criminal legal challenges. These legal proceedings are about upholding the rule of law in the United States. Yet, the Supreme Court has just generalized that anything defined as an “official act” while president can receive absolute immunity.

The Supreme Court’s decision can insulate many of Trump’s allegedly criminal acts from indictment or prosecution. The court sends the case back to the district court for it to determine the definition of official vs. unofficial. This, of course, delays Trump’s January 6 trial even further, but it also, and glaringly, lays a dangerous precedent for the position of the presidency.

One thing is clear: If we do not want to live under a monarchy ruled by Trump, we must ensure a huge Democratic turnout this November to stop him and vote in a Democratic Senate majority to reign in this extreme Supreme Court. But further, as Trump is a man and not an anointed king, he is not above the law and must be held to those standards.

The lower courts that will now determine Trump’s immunity scope must rebut showing that his unofficial acts posed dangers to his office, our democracy, and the American people. No one is above the law – presidents should be subject to the same laws as the rest of us.
