Over the Thanksgiving break, a video went viral of Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert spewing bigoted and Islamophobic remarks about Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar.

In the video, Boebert shared the story of an alleged encounter she had in an elevator with Rep. Omar. Boebert claims she told her staffer, "Well, she doesn't have a backpack. We should be fine." The statement was made in reference to the harmful and anti-Muslim trope of explosives in a backpack. Boebert also refers to Omar as being a part of the “Jihad Squad” twice in the video.

The so-called encounter in the elevator, which Rep. Omar has noted is completely made up, garnered applause and laughter from the audience during Boeberts speech. But the disgusting and dangerous vitriol is all too real.

Leaders of the House of Representatives must immediately take this moment to not only condemn Boeberts remarks but to strip her of her committee assignments and censure her. Moreover, Congress has a responsibility to prove to the world that Muslim Americans matter and that Islamophobia has no place in our democracy.

Rep. Cori Bush describes Capitol Hill as a toxic work environment for Muslim members and staff. A place where Islamophobia goes unchecked with no consequences. That must stop NOW.

We’re calling for a complete overhaul of congressional culture that allows for vulnerable members of Congress to experience hate, bigotry, and Islamophobia. We’re calling for an end to hate-filled members of Congress enabling violence, and spewing bigoted remarks about Muslim Americans. It ends here.
