Sign the petition to ban horse carriages in NYC
We are urging the New York City Council and Mayor Mamdani to pass Ryder’s Law to transition our city away from horse carriages and toward a safer, more humane future.
On June 9, 2026 another carriage horse collapsed and died in Central Park — a heartbreaking reminder that our current system is not working. We have seen this happen too many times before, including Ryder, the carriage horse who collapsed in Hell’s Kitchen in 2022 and inspired this legislation.
NYC has always evolved. Practices that were once common can and should change when we know there is a better path forward. Horses are living beings who deserve dignity and compassion, and they should not be forced to navigate the noise, traffic, and demands of Manhattan streets.
At the same time, this transition must include the workers whose livelihoods are connected to this industry. Carriage drivers and their families deserve respect, economic security, and a seat at the table. I urge the City Council to work with TWU, animal advocates, and all stakeholders to create a thoughtful transition that protects horses while supporting workers.
With 71% of NYC voters supporting an end to horse-drawn carriages, now is the time for action.
