“A stain on our national conscience” is how President Biden has described the Trump administration's Muslim ban. Yet within the same year of revoking his predecessor’s executive order banning travel from Muslim majority countries, President Biden implemented a travel ban of his own - barring travel from Southern African countries.
It has become increasingly clear that the executive office’s legal authority to restrict travel is a tool that will be continually abused to threaten the livelihoods of vulnerable communities within the U.S. and abroad.
Five years after the Muslim ban was first enacted, we can see the enduring harm the ban had on Muslim communities. A new study found that a significant number of people in the Muslim community in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area skipped their primary care appointment after the ban and also found an uptick in emergency room visits. The findings indicate how abrupt changes in immigration policy can directly affect health outcomes among people residing in the United States.
President Biden was right. The Muslim ban is a stain on our national conscience in the same vain that his African ban is. The Omicron variant was already present in dozens of other countries and U.S. states when the Biden administration implemented the racist and anti-Black ban on eight Southern African countries. The World Bank has noted that Africa faced "severe" economic consequences as a result of restrictions on mobility and travel during the pandemic, and experts say this instability could last for years. Moreover, public health experts and African leaders have noted that the ban undermines our ability to respond to and recover from the pandemic on a global scale.
It has become increasingly apparent that previous presidents have weaponized this executive power to do more harm than good for public health, safety, and immigrant communities. The No Ban Act would limit U.S. immigration law so that no future president can single-handedly issue bans that bar immigrants based on their national origin or religion. Help ensure another Muslim Ban and African Ban never see the light of day.
