SIM's 'Know Your Rights' Program

The Student Immigrant Movement (SIM) is an undocumented youth-led grassroots organization. The members and leaders of SIM are youth who are directly impacted by immigration law enforcement. For years, many of us lived in the shadows out of the fear of deportation and our families being separated. Many of us did not share our stories, experiences, concerns, or emotions with others out of fear of being targeted for being undocumented or being a part of a mixed-status family. Through SIM, young leaders in our community were able to learn that everyone has rights regardless of immigration status. This realization made it possible for us to learn how to manage encounters with local, state, and federal law enforcement. Encounters with law enforcement are oftentimes unpredictable, but as a community, we can do our part to make sure we are informed and prepared for situations that come our way. Thanks to lawyers in the SIM network and our leaders we have been able to put together a program for youth to learn their rights, how to use them, and a variety of resources for family preparedness.

The Know Your Rights Program (KYR) is one of SIM’s major programs along with the College Access Program and the Youth Financial Literacy Program. SIM's objective is to provide safe spaces for training and conversations about community protection and civil rights through our KYR program series for immigrant youth. We believe that is important for youth to learn their rights, family preparedness, and how to manage interactions with law enforcement so they can share information they learn with their families and community too. Through KYR, we encourage youth to stay connected in SIM to build strong relationships in their community and become more involved with SIM’s many different teams and programs.

For our Know Your Rights Program (KYR): We will engage youth in a series of workshops, panels/conversations with guest speakers, and share important resources for youth and families to know about. We also offer introductory classroom presentations for high schools looking to start a conversation about 'Know Your Rights' with students.
