Sign the petition: Five ways to end fly-tipping in Croydon

An image of rubbish

Croydon is shamefully the fly-tipping capital of the UK. Too many of our streets are filthy and unhygienic.

Why? Because unlike other boroughs, we have NO ENFORCEMENT. We remove the mess criminals dump for free, but we don’t punish them!

Croydon Labour is calling on the Mayor to take action now. We know money’s tight, but it’s a huge waste of public money to keep cleaning up criminals’ mess instead of stopping them for good.

Sign the petition to get the Mayor to act:

  1. Employ two enforcement officers to allow the Council to take enforcement action against fly-tipping vandals. This can be a pilot to see if it saves money in the longterm, paid for by saving more money on Croydon Council’s contracts.
  2. Introduce ‘Mega Skip Days’ to areas where there is low car ownership and high rates of fly-tipping. This pop-up way of getting rid of waste would include recycling facilities. Again, this can be run as a trial. In Wandsworth, these skip days have seen a 16% reduction in fly-tipping, saving the Council money.
  3. Allow private companies to take enforcement action against fly-tippers. These companies would be allowed to keep the fines they raise to pay for their costs e.g. CCTV, with no expense to the taxpayer. Southwark are also looking at this option.
  4. Publicly name and shame anyone who is caught for fly-tipping, to act as a deterrent.
  5. ‘Design out’ fly-tipping in hot-spots for example using trees and benches to block off areas of repeat offence.

Fly-tipping is dangerous, unhygienic and a crime. It shouldn’t go unpunished. Add your name to this petition and get the Mayor to act!

This petition was started by the Croydon Labour Group with Cllr Chris Herman, and Cllr Rowenna Davis.
