Take the Pledge: Safe Learning Environments for Every Student
Schools should be havens. But right now, many of our students are scared, anxious, and feeling threatened. We are hearing from students and educators around the country who are encountering hostile, hateful environments in their schools and communities, with fake deportation notices being handed out and swastikas drawn in bathrooms. We are being flooded with reports of hate speech and images directed at students in our schools. Nooses. Racist graffiti. Threats to our LGBTQ students. Headscarves being torn off. Girls being assaulted. Children are hearing that they are not welcome in their schools and even in the country they call home.
There is no place for this in our schools. Educators know that this isn't about politics, but simply that every student deserves a safe, welcoming, affirming learning environment. In fact, research shows that learning is stunted when the most basic need to feel safe and respected is not met. The three million members of the NEA and our allies are here to say: you are safe with me.

En este momento muchos de nuestros estudiantes están asustados, inquietos y se sienten amenazados. Hemos visto incidentes de hostilidad y odio en nuestras escuelas y comunidades, como avisos de deportación falsos para asustar a nuestros niños(as) y esvásticas dibujadas en los baños.
Estamos inundados con informes de incidentes e imágenes de odio dirigidos a nuestros estudiantes. Grafiti racista, horcas en público y amenazas contra nuestros estudiantes LGBTQ. Han arrancando los hiyab de nuestras alumnas, agredido a nuestras niñas. A muchos de nuestros niños(as) se les ha dicho que no son bienvenidos en sus escuelas y en el país que conocen como su hogar.
Esto no debe ocurrir en nuestras escuelas. Como educadores sabemos que esto va más allá de la política. Cada estudiante merece un ambiente escolar seguro, acogedor, que favorece el aprendizaje. Está demostrado que es muy difícil aprender cuando los estudiantes no se sienten seguros y respetados.
Por todo esto, los tres millones miembros de la Asociación Nacional de la Educación (NEA) y nuestros aliados estamos aquí para decirle a nuestros estudiantes: Estamos aquí para protegerte.
