Dear Prime Minister and Chancellor,

Re: Tax Wealth at the Autumn Budget – Fund Emergency Action on the Cost of Living Crisis

As the wealth of the very richest grows ever larger, millions are being pushed to the brink - squeezed by soaring food prices, rising energy bills and unaffordable housing costs.

The cost of living crisis remains the number one issue facing people across the country. Tackling this social emergency must be the top priority at the Autumn Budget.

We call on you to use the Budget to tax wealth fairly and create a Social Emergency Fund — to deliver immediate support to ease the pressure on families.

There are many fair and practical ways to raise revenue from wealth, including:

  • A 2% Wealth Tax on assets over £10 million, raising up to £24 billion a year.

  • Equalising Capital Gains Tax with Income Tax, raising up to £12 billion a year.

  • Clamping down on tax loopholes and abuses that the super-rich and large corporations use to hoard their wealth to raise billions more

Polls consistently show overwhelming public support for measures to make the wealthy pay more.

It’s time for the Government to act — to tax wealth in this Budget and establish a Social Emergency Fund to tackle the cost-of-living crisis without delay.

Yours sincerely,
Richard Burgon MP
and the undersigned members of the public
