Tell Congress: Protect Federal Disaster Relief from Trump's Attacks

When climate disasters strike—whether hurricanes, floods, wildfires, or tornadoes—American communities rely on immediate, life-saving aid from federal agencies like FEMA, the Small Business Administration (SBA), and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). These agencies provide critical support in the days, weeks, and months after disaster hits, helping families rebuild their homes, businesses reopen their doors, and entire communities recover and thrive.

But now, these lifesaving programs are under attack.

President Trump and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have frozen federal disaster aid and ordered a sweeping review of disaster relief programs—threatening to dismantle them entirely. This administration has already fired more than 200 FEMA employees, including the agency’s chief financial officer, with more layoffs planned. Key HUD offices that serve disaster-stricken areas—like those in California —are facing complete shutdowns, leaving countless survivors uncertain about their future.

This is not efficiency. This is abandonment.

Trump claims states should shoulder the burden of disaster recovery on their own. But with climate change accelerating the frequency and severity of disasters, state budgets are stretched beyond their limits. Without the coordinated support of federal disaster relief programs, countless Americans will be left stranded after the next hurricane, wildfire, or flood.

We cannot allow this to happen.

Congress must act NOW to protect FEMA, HUD, and SBA disaster relief programs from Trump’s reckless and short-sighted cuts. These programs aren’t about politics—they’re about people. They are the reason survivors can get back on their feet after losing everything. They are the backbone of America’s disaster response system.

Congress must:

Fully fund FEMA, HUD, and SBA disaster relief programs to ensure immediate and long-term support for disaster survivors.
Block any attempts by the Trump administration to eliminate or weaken these essential agencies.
Investigate the mass layoffs and proposed closures of key disaster relief offices, ensuring accountability and transparency.
Guarantee that disaster aid is deployed based on need—not politics or profit motives.

We cannot stand by while DOGE cuts our nation’s disaster preparedness and response systems. Millions of lives and livelihoods depend on these programs.
