In late April, the Supreme Court gave Republicans what they have wanted for years: a green light to redraw maps, weaken voting rights protections, and wipe Democratic seats off the board across the South.

Donald Trump celebrated what he saw as the GOP's permanent advantage, and Republicans are now moving at record pace to target Black representation, Democratic voters, and the congressional districts that still give working people a voice in states like Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina.

And just today, another court handed Republicans what Trump is calling a "huge win." As The New York Times reports:

Virginia's top court struck down a congressional map drawn by Democrats and recently approved by voters, dealing a major blow to the party as it struggles to keep pace with Republicans in the nation’s redistricting battle. The ruling will wipe out four newly drawn Democratic-leaning U.S. House districts in Virginia, giving Republicans, who have carved out more red seats across the country, a structural advantage as they enter the midterm elections.

Democrats have to take immediate action to defend democracy! Democratic party leaders, governors, and state legislators have to stop hesitating—they need to redistrict quickly and aggressively!

If Democrats do that, they can create as many as 22 new blue U.S. House seats across seven blue and swing states by 2028, and fully neutralize the GOP's projected 19-seat gain across the South.
