AB 1881, the California Native American Freedom Act, has officially passed the California Legislature. Now Governor Gavin Newsom must sign it into law.

This bill would strengthen protections for California Native American peoples to practice their religions, ceremonies, and cultural traditions, including protecting access to sacred places and the use of sacred objects and natural materials.

For generations, California Native peoples have faced laws and policies that restricted, criminalized, and disrupted their religious and cultural practices. AB 1881 is an important step toward protecting these fundamental rights and respecting Tribal sovereignty.

The Legislature has done its part. Now we need Governor Newsom to finish the job.
