Tell Iowa Lawmakers: Fully Fund Iowa Public Schools

Most of us remember a robust public school system in Iowa, with full funding and respect for educators. Unfortunately, the "foundation in education" chiseled on the Iowa state quarter is no longer reality for our communities. That’s why we’re calling on legislators to restore strong public school budgets.

Funding under Republican leadership has plummeted, failing to match inflation and what experts say is needed to provide strong schools. Additionally, in its third year Republicans’ vouchers will have cost Iowans one billion dollars to let anyone—even millionaires—use taxpayer funded vouchers for private school tuition. A handout for the wealthy paid for by Iowa’s working families.

Now, public schools are facing increased closure and consolidation threats and more than 150 districts may have to increase local property taxes to make up for budget shortfalls created by the state.

Iowans want to see public schools fully funded by our state leaders, no matter which party is in charge. It’s time lawmakers prioritize our communities and fully fund Iowa public schools. Let’s plan a robust budget for our public schools now, and give students what they need for a successful school year, and future.
