President Biden has called for an end to all fossil fuel subsidies, ordered a ban on new oil and gas leases on federal land, and said a third of all federal lands must be reserved for conservation. He even revoked permits for the dangerous Keystone Pipeline on his first day in office.

Yet the Line 3 Pipeline expansion project continues to move forward in Minnesota without so much as a word from President Biden despite protests that have been going on for years.

Now, Enbridge Energy, the company behind Line 3 is paying the Hubbard County Police Department to remove protesters against the pipeline, and these out-of-control cops are using a tactic euphemistically called “pain compliance.” This tactic is to inflict searing, debilitating pain using pressure points until the protesters give in to the police demands. In short, it’s corporate-funded, state-sanctioned torture in service of worsening the climate crisis.

This must stop now. The pipeline. The police brutality. All of it. And President Biden can do it with the stroke of a pen.

Let’s be clear, the goal of the pipeline is to bring nearly a million barrels of tar sands per day from Canada to Wisconsin in a new pipeline corridor straight through Minnesota’s untouched wetlands and the treaty territory of Anishinaabe peoples, and through the Mississippi River headwaters to the shore of Lake Superior.

Not only will the pipeline actually produce emissions equal to 50 coal plants and contribute more to climate change than Minnesota’s entire economy, but Enbridge Energy, the company responsible for the pipeline, is already also responsible for the largest inland oil spill in US history.

We are in the midst of a climate crisis that endangers human life, and we must act like it!

The people are standing up and fighting to stop the pipeline in every way they can and 80 water protectors were charged with felonies in July and August alone. Now the cops are being paid by a corporation to torture people engaged in these time-honored forms of protest and causing permanent physical harm. President Biden’s Department of Justice must enforce the law and protect protestors from police brutality.
